My name is Lars!

Even though I'd been working in the music industry for 25 years, I didn't know much about building a strategic music catalog, - I kinda left catalog building to the major labels, and blockbuster artists like Taylor Swift and Bruce Springsteen...
For years, I used to run between sessions, trying to write the next hit. Afterward, I'd attempt to get it out there, released by an artist. Occasionally, I'd secure a sync deal for one of my songs in a TV show or commercial. Despite writing around 100 songs a year, only about 1 out of 10 would ever be released. That's the average cut-rate in the music industry, meaning that only 10% or less of the songs you write actually get released by an artist. Of those, only a tiny percentage end up being singles pushed to radio and beyond, and only a few of those become successful, generating income for you as the music creator.
As much as I loved the creative process in the studio, the problem was cash flow and generating a stable income from my music. Constantly having to chase the next gig, the next session, or any activity that would generate income to pay rent was stressful and not conducive to the creativity of any human being.
I needed to have my songs accepted by a label and released by an artist to create income. I would write songs, try to get them pushed through the system and released—hopefully as singles—otherwise, there wouldn't be much left after your co-writers, publishers, and labels had taken their share. Some of my songs ended up doing quite well, others made it onto the album but didn't really contribute much to my success, and more significantly, the majority of the songs I'd created met a silent death on my hard drive.
What was especially frustrating to me was how little control I had over my career and income. I had to depend on other people's decisions for my music to make money. It was challenging to predict how much money I would make each year, and I wasn't in control of the destiny of most of my songs.
I looked ahead and realized the odds of making a lot of money only being a creator in the music business weren't great...
I knew something had to change
